    Accepting Applications for Spring 2026!

The SNRE is now accepting applications for our new MS in Interdisciplinary Ecology online program for distance education students.

Whether you’re at home, out in the field, or anywhere around the world, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from renowned faculty, enroll in quality classes, and become part of our growing network of environmental professionals.

The School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) offers a 30-credit self-funded Professional Master of Science (M.S.) Degree (thesis and non-thesis track) in Interdisciplinary Ecology (IEC-Online) for distance education.

The IEC-Online graduate program captures the interdisciplinary nature of the ecology graduate program by enriching opportunities for broad education to students engaged in core disciplines and professional degree programs; integrating discipline-centered graduate education to offer both basic and applied science and policy analysis as related to ecosystems and associated environmental sciences.

Learn about our course areas and explore the curriculum:

    • Ecology
    • Ecology

Core courses in this track enable students to gain a foundational understanding of ecological concepts or to explore the ecology of organisms, populations, and communities more deeply, and/or ecosystems.

    • Natural Sciences
    • Natural Sciences

Natural science courses seek to understand how biotic and abiotic resources are linked to management actions and outcomes within an ecosystem context. This is an extremely broad realm that includes core courses on biophysical systems and processes, natural ecosystems, and intensively managed and built ecosystems dedicated to meeting human needs.

    • Social Sciences
    • Social Sciences

Core courses in the social sciences focus on central theoretical concerns and/or offer surveys of major topics in a social science discipline regarding natural resources and the environment. Social science electives tend to be more specialized, whether they focus on particular theoretical perspectives, substantive topics, management problems or regions of the world.

    • Sustainability Science
    • Sustainability Science

These courses focus on the integration of ecological, natural sciences, and social factors to sustain humans and ecological systems. Sustainability science emphasizes interdisciplinary issues involving the integrity and resilience of natural and social systems over time, including environmental health and those that blend environmental policy, economics, justice, which requires integrative thinking to address complex problems.

    • Data Science
    • Data Science

These courses focus on analyzing and interpreting data and information using methods drawn from statistics, geospatial science, information science, and disciplinary knowledge. Electives within this category support development of a foundation in statistical concepts, experimental design, interpretation of documents, interviews, and observations, or application of theoretical and statistical models.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Why Online?
      • An online degree at UF is the same as any other degree. Our online program is customizable and flexible: made to work for you and your goals.
      • You’ll have the full support of the SNRE Staff, access to our Academic Hub for SNRE online students, and entry to UF’s online social and support community, the UF Online Plaza.
    • What’s the difference between the on-campus program and the online program?

The on-campus MS program and the online MS program are very similar. The curricula have slight variations in terms of course offerings as some courses are not available online while others are not available on campus. However, graduation requirements for both programs are the same.

    • What’s the difference between the thesis and non-thesis options?
      • The thesis option requires students to develop a research question, plan their approach, and gather original data to analyze and synthesize. It combines formal coursework with the student’s first experience with original research. For students intending to pursue a doctoral degree, the master's experience provides an opportunity to explore and refine interests, develop research skills, and learn from mistakes in a preliminary phase.
      • The non-thesis option is for students who are seeking a practitioner or professional degree. The non-thesis option does not require a thesis, but it does require students to complete an exhaustive term paper compiling and analyzing existing knowledge. It was created for students to undertake an intensive curriculum to prepare for or enhance employment in regulatory agencies, consultancies, natural resource management agencies, and related organizations.
    • What are the prerequisites for applying?
